Our Heritage
Abdullah Ali Almunajem founded Almunajem Group in the 1950s, starting with a small fruit and vegetable trade in Riyadh. He expanded into large-scale cold storage, becoming a leading importer in Saudi Arabia. His success was rooted in vision, resilience, and Islamic values of honesty and integrity.
With the pumping of oil from the fields of Saudi Arabia in commercial quantities in the fifties of the last century, the government of Saudi Arabia started utilizing this wealth for the development of the country. A number of self-taught men sensed this change and proceeded to participate in it. Amongst these, the Founder of our Group, Abdullah Ali Almunajem (1913-1981), who seeded the nucleus for the first core Group of Companies, which are now considered active and effective players in their respective fields.

From scratch, he decided at the early fifties to move from his hometown, Al- Qassim region, to the capital Riyadh to trade in the field of vegetables and fruits. Then, he continued on to develop his small business by importing the same products from Syria and Lebanon - then the only key countries which were supplying Saudi Arabia, shortly after which he became the largest importer of vegetables and fruits in Riyadh region.

He survived life’s many difficulties of the time, starting already from the military service in Medina city within the Army of King Abdulaziz, the Founder of the 3rd Saudi State. The Army was where he learned how to read and write, and he excelled in mathematics. He returned after seven years of military service to Al-Qassim to work in the caravans trade, traveling on his camels back and forth to Kuwait, Iraq and Syria. At the early forties and when cars started to spread in the Kingdom, Sheikh Abdullah realized the transition very early. He decided at that time to move to the field of traditional construction business in Riyadh. He then sensed the future prospects and decided to move with his family to Riyadh where he settled permanently to commence his business. He and his family lived in a small house rented for an amount equivalent to $ 50 per year.

His deep vision, along with the rapid execution of it, were the key elements behind his amazing success story. He established the first cold store in Riyadh with a mere storage capacity of 200 tons that was, however, already expanded in the following year to 300 tons. At the early seventies, he set up what could be considered as the largest cold store in the Kingdom with a storage capacity of 4,000 tons, which was seen as a ‘fantastic project’ at that time.

He set his philosophy in business based on the compliance with the great principals of Islam, which call for honesty, integrity, fulfillment of commitment and fair treatment towards his customers, suppliers and employees. These values have continued to be a permanent philosophy of Almunajem Group.

    “Almunajem” owns and manages –with a healthy penetration- numerous cold stores in different parts of the kingdom, covering the whole country with a quantity of goods imported exceeding 300 thousand tons per year of various branded products, which cover about 10%-30% of the volume of the domestic consumption, depending on the product category. In addition, the Company owns a number of refrigeration industry facilities and food production plants, beside sophisticated distribution and supply chain infrastructures and a large number of dining restaurants in all over the kingdom.
